최근 유명한 천문학자들이 북극 하늘을 관찰하면서 발견한 과학적인 사실이 미국 과학회에서 발간되는 Chemical and Engineering News의 1981년 10월 19일 호에 발표되었다. 그 내용이 지금부터 약 4천년 전 욥기에 기록된 성경 말씀과 꼭 같기에 그 원문의 일부를 실어 본다.
Stellar region nearly empty of galaxies
As any casual stargazer would predict, the distribution of stars and galaxies in the universe is not uniform. Certain regions in space hold clumps and clusters of these objects, and others are relatively empty.
But even astronomers are surprised by new findings from three observatories that show just how uneven the distribution of galaxies is. A team of astronomers has found a huge region near the North Star that is nearly empty of visible galaxies, It covers 30°to 40°of the sky and takes up about 1％ of the entire observable universe. In fact, it's large enough to hold about 2,000 galaxies the size of the Milky Way.
The investigators are Robert Kirshner of the University on Michigan, Augustus Oemler Jr. of Yale University, Paul L. Schechter of Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona, and Stephen A. Shectman of Carnegie Instruction's Mount Wilson, Calif., and Las Campanas, Chile, observatories. The region they have discovered includes part of the constellation Bootes and is in the same area of the sky as the handle of the Big Dipper.
"To have found a population density of less than three times the average would have been a rare find." Schechter says. "But finding that the density is about 10 times less than the average is exceedingly hard to understand."
The region puzzles Schechter and other astronomers because most of them accept the theory that the density of galaxies was fairly uniform just after the great explosion, or "big bang," that started the universe 10 billion to 20 billion years ago. Building from such a fairly uniform distribution, they had not predicted that such a vast region of space would be so empty. |

그 내용은 북극성 주변의 방대한 지역, 즉 2,000여개의 은하수를 넣을 수 있을 만큼 큰 지역이 거의 비어 있다는 것이었다. 그러면 은하수는 도대체 얼마나 큰 것일까? 대단히 큰 것으로 상상되는 태양계(반경이 약 59억㎞)는 우리가 살고 있는 지구를 포함해서 모두 10개의 별을 가진 아주 작은 계(system)이지만, 전체가 렌즈 모양으로 생긴 은하수는 약 천 억개(개)의 별을 포함하고 있는 거대한 별들의 집합체이다.
지구는 이 거대한 은하수의 가장자리에 존재한다. 그런데 놀라운 것은 이렇게 거대한 은하수 약 2,000여개가 들어갈 수 있는 넓은 공간이 거의 텅 빈 채로 지구의 북쪽에 보이는 북극성 근처에 존재한다는 사실이다. 또한 일반적으로 우주 공간에 별들의 밀집도(Population Density)가 평균 밀집도의 1/3 정도 되는 곳도 흔하지 않은데 이 지역은 평균 밀집도의 1/10 미만이라는 것이다. 이러한 사실을 천문학자들이 최근까지 전혀 상상하지 못했다는 점과 과학 기술이 고도로 발달했다고 생각하는 오늘날에 와서야 비로소 발견된 것은 우리에게 어떤 교훈을 주는 것일까?
수 천년 전에 기록된 성경 말씀들이 오늘에 이르러서야 과학자들에 의하여 그 신비의 베일이 하나씩 하나씩 풀려가는 사실 속에서 새삼스럽게 살아 계신 하나님을 보는 것 같으며 우리가 이루어 놓은 모든 학문은 초등 학문(갈 4:3, 골 2:8, 21)이라는 성경 말씀이 이해된다.
거대한 우주, 그 속에 존재하는 은하수, 태양계, 그리고 인간이 살아가는 이 지구(땅)를 공간에 다신 창조자 하나님의 능력을 생각하면서 “여호와를 경외하는 것이 지식의 근본이라”(잠 1:7) 는 말씀이 새삼 생각난다.
